New Labour clings on…

May 21, 2008

It seems Labour’s long, slow agonising death in Wirral has yet to prove terminal.  Last night, the Liberal Democrats gave the ever-shrinking Labour Group mouth-to-mouth.

Conservatives, who beat Labour and the Liberal Democrats on May 1st, had proposed opening up the Council, giving all councillors a greater say in the decision making and ending the Mugabe-style leadership of the Town Hall.

Instead, the Liberal Democrats renewed their deal although they did take the Deputy Leadership of the Council as well.

So, in spite of losing Bebington, Liscard, New Brighton, Upton and, of course, Leasowe, Labour is clining on.

I don’t think it will do anyone any good.  The cuts to public services will continue; the cost of living here in Wirral will continue to rise and really important issues such as road safety, anti social behaviour and saving our green spaces will be neglected.

The agreement between Labour and the Liberal Democrats looks like being the longest suicide note in Wirral’s history.
