Roads Policing

June 30, 2008

Local Police held a ’spotlight’ day in the precinct in Liscard last week.  The theme was cycling on the pavements which was put together following several complaints about this issue.

In total, ten fixed penalty notices were issued to ‘offenders’.  Thanks to the Police who have listened to concerns and acted.  Those Police involved received very positive comments from pedestrians who were shopping that day.

Hopefully this will act as a strong deterrent to repeat offenders!

Supporting our Troops

June 29, 2008

Whatever your opinion of the various battles our troops are engaged in across the world, I’m sure that admiration for their courage and professionalism unites us all.

Over the past few weeks, along with my collegues from Manor Bakeries, I have been collecting various toiletries, magazines and books to send to our troops in Afghanistan. I hope this very small gesture goes some way to reminding those in our armed forces that we are thinking of them, and are grateful for their sacrifices.

Thankfully Royal Mail have agreed to waive the postage fee for packages being sent to soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, so if you know of anyone in the armed forces at the moment, why not arrange something similar for them and their colleagues?

Potholes

June 28, 2008

Whilst out and about I noticed that the Newell Road area had more than its fair share of pot holes! Someone had taken the trouble to mark the pot holes, but it seemed to be taking ages to have them properly prepared.

I spoke with our Streetscene Area Manager and the pot holes were repaired a few days later!

St Alban’s Summer Fair

June 28, 2008

Today along with Cllr Karen Hayes I popped along to the summer fair at St Albans Primary School. It was great to see so many people there supporting the school.

Karen bought some home made jam and I came away with a few books. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and thankfully the rain stayed off!

Weatherhead School

June 26, 2008

Last night I attended the summer Governor’s meeting at Weatherhead School.  I was really pleased to hear from the Head Girl that they had raised nearly £1,000 for St John’s Hospice from a ‘non uniform’ day recently and that the new Astro turf sports facility has been officially opened.

It was a good meeting and I’m looking forward to results day this summer!

Post Offices under new threat

June 25, 2008

Yesterday, I went to visit Paul Wollaston who is the sub-postmaster at Wallasey Post Office in Liscard (near to Barclays Bank), after reading his letter in the Liverpool ECHO on Monday night.  He’s concerned about the threat to our remaining branches from the loss of the Post Office Card Account.

A decision will be made by the Government in the summer on whether to renew the contract to run the account with the Post Office.   The account is used by four milion people every week to access their pensions and benefit payments.

Everytime some uses the card at their local post office, the sub-postmaster receives a small payment from the Government.  THis is worth up to 12% of some sub-postmasters’ pay.  It is the reason why some branches can still survive.  If the account is awarded to another organisation a further 3,000 post offices will be at risk, says the National Federation of Sub-Postmasters.

Until the Government mades a decision, you can read about the Post Office Action Plan by the Conservatives.

Tall Ships take to water

June 25, 2008

An article in today’s Daily Post lists those roads which are to be closed and which are to be made ’red routes’, as Wirral prepares for hundreds of thousands of visitors wanting to see the Tall Ships next month, which will be on the Mersey between Friday and Monday, July 18-21.

A number of roads in Egremont will be affected.  The Parade of Sail is scheduled to take place between 2pm and 4pm on Monday 21 July and a newsletter containing travel and event information plus a ‘help line’ number will be sent at the beginning of July to all local residents likely to be affected.  To read more click here.

It’s gone - at last!

June 23, 2008

The eyesore which was the Old Dairy in Rice Lane has finally been demolished, much to the delight of local residents living there!

When the remaining houses in Royston Avenue and Woodhall Avenue have been demolished and the area flattened, the Council hope to submit plans for housing.

As soon as we have more details we’ll let you know.
