Don’t Give A Dog A Bad Name

July 13, 2009

One of the biggest complaints we receive when out and about knocking on doors in Liscard is about the amount of dog muck on the streets because of those few irresponsible dog owners who just refuse to pick up after their dogs.

Finally the Council have launched a campaign of enforcement against these people, entitled ‘Don’t Give A Dog A Bad Name’. Council officers will be patrolling parks and open spaces, as well as Wirral’s Coastline on their quad bike, to detect and issue on the spot £50 fines to owners who do not pick up after their dog. Lets hope this goes some way to addressing the problem and acts as a deterrent to owners who selfishly leave their pets to soil our parks and highway.

Pictured below is Karen and I at the ‘Don’t Give A Dog A Bad Name’ stall at the Wirral Show.

Leah, Karen and I enjoying the Wirral Show

Today I, along with Karen and Leah attended the opening day of the 33rd Wirral Show. The event is organised by the Wallasey Rotary, Lions and Roundtable clubs and is always a huge success.

Karen and I with the Wirral Recycling Team

This year the organising committee of volunteers promised ’something for everyone’ and this they certainly achieved: with the traditional fairground rides, various attractions and stalls providing information about local businesses, charities and other organisations. We took the time to speak with the Recycling Team from Wirral Council who were doing surveys to make sure people knew what to put in their grey bin (I’m pleased to say I answered all of the questions correctly!). We also spoke with the Wirral Youth Service and noticed that the Respect Team were out in force with activities for young people to take part in.

Use them or lose them!

April 21, 2009

Wirral Council has received funding to encourage shoppers in our town centers to recycle.

A total of 20 new bins have been installed across Wirral with 5 going to Liscard.

Anything that normally goes in the grey bin at home can go in the recycle slot.

If shoppers fail to use the bins as intended, they will be converted into normal bins.

Finally!

March 20, 2009

Back in March, a table and  chairs was dumped in the alleyway linking Manor Road and Manor Lane.

Despite a number if phone calls and emails the council failed to respond.

Last week the rubbish was finally removed!

To report fly-tipping in your area email me at: jameskeeley@wirral.gov.uk or call 0151-639-5179

Brown Bins

July 2, 2008

Now that it’s summer (it is, isn’t it?), many people have turned their attention to their gardens.  But, in spite of the Council’s requests that we all recycle in different coloured bins, they still haven’t delivered brown bins for garden waste to all those people that need them.

If you still haven’t received yours, email me at leahfraser@wirral.gov.uk and I’ll make sure you receive one.

Green Action Day in Withens Lane

March 27, 2008

Today saw another Green Action Day, this time myself and Cllr Leah Fraser, armed with bin bags and litter pickers, walked to Withens Lane and attempted to make a start on cleaning up a well known grot spot there.

The area looked a lot tidier when we left – lets hope it stays that way.

They’ve replaced the twig…

March 11, 2008

Three new trees have been planted in Liscard Way.   We waited nearly two years for one tree to be replaced and in the meantime two others were vandalised by yobs.

When the new tree did finally arrive it resembled an overgrown twig!  We weren’t impressed, complained to the Director of Streetscene and demanded more substantial ones.

Hopefully the new substantial trees will be less likely to be vandalised.  We’ll be watching……

A new tree finally, but…..

January 30, 2008

…it’s described as a ’semi mature Prunus’ – it looks like an overgrown twig to me!

I’ve complained to the Director of Technical Services – we’ve waited nearly two years for one tree to be replaced in Liscard.  Part of the delay was the Council’s contractor going into voluntary liquidation, then it wasn’t the ‘planting season’.  Since then a further two trees have been vandalised.

The Director has agreed to replace these trees with more substantial ones, we’re getting either ‘prunus schmittii’ or ‘prunus kanzan’ semi mature trees, each installed with 8ft stakes.

Quite frankly, and as I said to the Director, as long as they look and grow like proper trees, we’ll be happy.  Hopefully the new substantial trees will be less likely to be vandalised.  We’ll be watching……

Too much waste?

December 20, 2007

If you produce more waste than usual this Christmas and can’t fit it all into your green or grey bin, then you can use a Household Waste Recycling Centre.  The nearest one to Liscard is in Bidston.  It’s open 8am – 5pm most days over the festive period – or call 0151 255 1444 for opening hours.

If you have a brown garden waste bin, you can use that for Christmas recycling too. You can chop your Christmas tree up and put it in your brown bin.  Also, Christmas greenery such as mistletoe, holly, pine cones and wreaths can all go in your brown garden waste bin.
