Today the Council have been out in Egremont, showing residents the final two plans for the Royston/Woodhall avenue site.

Along with Leah Fraser and Karen Hayes, I went down to have a look and see what was on offer. 

The council are asking local residents to choose between the two options.

Option A offers a more traditional terraced design, while Option B offers a plan of houses which are gathered around a court, with more emphasis on green space.  

Cllr. Karen Hayes said “I think its great that local residents have the opportunity to take part in this process, I’ve got my favorite but i’ll wait to see what the residents choose!”

Last night, I went to a meeting of the Friends of Rake Lane Cemetery at Earlston Library.  As you can imagine most of the meeting focused on the chapel damage.  The Council have made the building safe and are looking to access funding so that the building does not become any more dilapidated than it already is - they said that about Liscard Hall, so we’ll be making sure the Council make the Chapel a priority. 

The Friends meet the first Monday of every month, so if you’d like to come along the next meeting is 1st September, starting at 7pm to 9pm.  All welcome!

This afternoon, along with Karen Hayes, we visited the Chapel in Rake Lane Cemetery to see for ourselves the damage caused by local vandals.  The Chapel hasn’t been used for six months and we were horrified by what the vandals had done; they smashed the alter, destroyed the stained glass windows and artificial flowers were strewn around, not to mention the mess made by pigeons who had managed to get inside.  It was extremely sad to see such a lovely Chapel reduced to this state.

Karen and I have worked with the Friends of Rake Lane Cemetery since it was formed to try to protect the area, along with Cllr Tony Pritchard.  The group was set up 18 months ago after four youths caused over £1m of damage to gravestones.  The Council have spent money on new fencing and lockable gates, but looking at the damage that’s been done, they need to invest far more to make it safe from these yobs.

I hope the council has learned lessons from Liscard Hall and don’t allow this historical Chapel to be destroyed and that they protect it from further damage.

There is a ‘Friends’ meeting tonight and we’ll be asking the Council what they intend to do to help protect this beautiful building.

After the early morning mass, I was off to the Radio city tower for a brief meeting and tour.

The views of Liverpool and Wirral from the top of the tower were awe inspiring.

Along with Councillors Karen Hayes; Tony Pritchard and Paul Hayes, I attended the final mass at St Peter and Paul’s Church.

Despite allegations of falling numbers, the church was packed full of sombre parishioners.

Although the church is officially closed from today, efforts by a large group of parishioners to keep the church open, continue in earnest.

This morning Alex, Karen, James and I spent a few hours on the Breck picking up rubbish.  I’m really pleased to say that there wasn’t as much litter as usual.  Since we campaigned for a bin (wouldn’t you think the Council would automatically put a bin in an area where people go to walk with their dogs?) it’s being used and litter isn’t left thrown around.

We spoke to a few residents who told us some youths had been there drinking last night, but hadn’t made too much noise.  This is the forth time we’ve had a Green Action Day on the Breck and this time we picked up about half a dozen lager cans - the rest was in the bin!

This afternoon we’re all out delivering Newsline in Liscard Town Centre.  Hopefully we’ll get them all out before it starts to rain - again.

This afternoon, Karen, James and I went along to the YMCA in Egremont for the ‘celebration of the new outdoor space’ - as it was billed!

The grounds have been in need of major repair for quie a while - it was particularly bad when it rained, with all the potholes and mud!  A revamp took place earlier this year, they’ve built an amphitheatre and outdoor plays have been organised.  The car park has been resurfaced as well - it looks fantastic.

There were lots of activities for the children and luckily the weather stayed dry!  Many congratulations to Tracey the manager and all the staff who worked so hard for a successful afternoon.

The YMCA is well worth a visit, they offer many different courses for the young and the old.  They also have a really well equipped gym - and are happy to take on new members!

Last night’s ‘Cameron Direct’ at Weatherhead High School in Wallasey, was attended by around 470 people from across Wirral.  It wasn’t a hand picked audience and included supporters of all political parties, and none!  Just before David Cameron went on stage, along with the other two Parliamentary candidates in Wirral, I had some time with him to talk about current issues, including the tunnels, police stations and the PCT.

The Conservative Leader then went on to answer questions for around an hour and the feedback I’ve had has been generally positive.  Colleagues from Birkenhead have said how pleaased they were!

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped the event go so smoothly and to Elliot (at CCHQ) for his help.  Thanks also to Weatherhead staff for making us so welcome.

The public meeting with David Cameron in Wallasey takes place tomorrow.  We’d planned for 200 people; in fact we’ve had 450 people apply.  Confirmation for those who have been allocated a seat were sent yesterday, along with commiserations for those who haven’t.

Next Wednesday, 20 August, local residents will be able to view the proposed plans for the housing development upon the Royston and Woodhall Avenues.

The consultation will take place in the car park on Stringhey Road (opposite the Co-Op) and the plans can be viewed between 12noon and 7pm, when you’ll be able to give your feedback about the plans to Wirral Council.  There will also be representatives from Cosmopolitan Housing Association, the architects and New Heartlands to answer any questions you may have.

There will also be information on the Equity Renewal Loans available to homeowners within the Egremont Area.  Refreshments are available and a Children’s Entertainer will be there to keep the youngsters occupied! 

They’ve thought of everything, let’s hope the plans come up to scratch!
